Investment into Market Harborough has continued this week as building work for a new £7.8 million hospital has finally begun after years of delays.

In 2014, NHS England confirmed it had approved the funding needed to build the new hospital. Since then the NHS Property Services has been working with NHS England and East Leicestershire and Rutland Clinical Commissioning Group to develop the detailed design and costings for the scheme to ensure that it is viable.

Monday marked a ground-breaking ceremony for the St Luke’s Hospital ‘Integrated Health Hub’ which was attended by representatives from the NHS and Morgan Sindall, the recently appointed building contractor.

The extension of St Luke’s Hospital will be performed throughout 2016 and it is expected to open late 2016 or early 2017. Once built, the new health service hub will be home to a variety of medical services which are currently located at Harborough District Hospital and the Welland Unit.

Included will be mental health services; GP services including minor injuries; ear, nose, throat and eye specialists; specialist radiography and ultrasound services; outpatients facilities for rehabilitation, speech and language, and the NHS has also announced that there will be a number of other specialist services available.

William Naylor, managing director at Naylors commented “This is really good news for Market Harborough. Campaigning for the new hospital started 28 years ago so it’s great for it to finally be commissioned” he continued “overall the investment will add extra appeal to the Market Harborough area.”

Further investment into Market Harborough

News of the building work comes just weeks after it was announced that the expansion of Harborough Business Park could create up to 700 jobs. The two separate developments serve to showcase the growing appeal of the Market Harborough area.
