Plans to improve the Market Harborough railway station have been announced by the Government.
The station is a popular one for commuters – notably for those travelling to and from London – and the 2016 Budget policy paper has announced that £1m will be allocated directly into the already present station scheme.
The scheme was was created earlier in the year after Network Rail put forward plans for ten of millions of pounds worth of improvements to the station. The plans included a straightening of the current S-curve of the railway line as it passes through Harborough.
A straightened line will reduce journey times to all north points of Market Harborough to and from London. The sum of money is also earmarked to move the car park to the opposite side of the tracks – increasing capacity by 200 spaces.
The length of the platforms at the station will also be doubled and the step up to trains reduced. Wheelchair and pushchair users will have friendly access, with step-free entry to the trains also scheduled.
With journeys of just over one hour into the heart of London, Market Harborough station is used by many commuters. The planned developments will make the service of travelling into London easier and further improve the commutable qualities of the town.
Work on the project is planned to start in late 2017 and completed by early 2019.
