According to the London-based survey firm, the Local Data Company, a whopping 17.8% of Leicester’s city centre shops potential lots (more than a sixth of the total number) remain empty in comparison to the national average of 11.8%. However, this is challenged by the city centre director, Sarah Harrison, who says the vacancy level has fallen dramatically over the last year.

The fortunes of Leicester city centre’s fortunes are in contrast with Market Harborough. The town has less than 4.5% of its stores empty – the lowest of any area in Leicestershire. The figure which is set to decrease even further with a recent influx of independent businesses and boutique stores transforming it into ‘the place to be’.
