The latest council proposals have been revealed and part of the 15 year local plan is to build more than 3,500 new homes in the Harborough district.

The documentation shows that future housing could be focused away from Market Harborough itself. The councillors are currently assessing four options from which one, or a hybrid solution that combines options, will be the final choice.

Only one of the four strategies involves concentration of housing within Market Harborough itself – councillors have also said this option is their least favourite of the four remaining.

Having since narrowed down from the original nine options, the four remaining include:

East of Lutterworth

Currently the council’s preferred choice, this development would provide a muchneeded eastern relief road for Lutterworth, crossing the M1 to the A426 at the north of the town. The plans include the building of nearly 2,000 homes by 2031, with an option for more to be added afterwards.

North and East of Kibworth

The other strong contender, this involves building 1,200 homes to the north and east of Kibworth, together with a new road. A major point in favour would be the relief this new road would bring to the A6, avoiding the current bottleneck situation in Kibworth.

Scraptoft/Thurnby

This option was originally rejected by councillors – it includes a mix of new housing in the Scraptoft and Thurnby areas, on the outskirts of the district. There are potential problems including having to relocate the Scraptoft Golf Club to make room for the site.

Market Harborough

On top of current plans to increase housing in Market Harborough, this option proposes that an additional 1,300 homes are brought to the area. This is currently least favoured by councillors.

There is already plenty of housing on the market in the Harborough district and Market Harborough itself, currently. Residential property which is available to either buy or rent, as well as commercial property is available.
